Sunbeam 5891 Breadmaker...works well for the price!

Pros: nice price nice size pan easy to use

Cons: rambling directions LCD does not light up color setting

The Bottom Line: nice low price basic machine. Good to learn on.

I am not much into baking and I am not really a person who spends a lot of time in the kitchen. However, I do like the smell of fresh bread and I like to make bread now and then.

I had an old bread machine that was cruddy and disgusting from all of the use I have put it through. I used this old machine almost weekly to make bread dough and never would complete the cycle and bake bread all the way through. My husband could never understand why I would only use my machine for bread dough and he got frustrated with that when I told him that I did not like the finished product.

So he brought home a new bread machine to me. The one he brought home is the Sunbeam 5891 Breadmaker. It is a nice looking machine with a window on the top so I can watch the bread as it bakes and rises. This is particularly important when children are in the house and they want to help with all cooking processes. This machine is nice for kids and for cooks who are not really into cooking and would not want to go to the full extent of an expensive machine.

I love the style of this machine although it is quite large and hard to fit on my shelf above my sink. I have to put it sideways. The machine itself is very nice looking. It is white and at first glance I would expect that the LCD display on the front would light up as soon as I turned it on. I was quite disappointed that although the box says "Easy to read LCD display" this is certainly not the case.

This bread machine has a large baking pan. I turned it and pulled it out of the machine quite easily. When I first went to set it up I had to put the paddle into the machine. I like that this paddle is easy to remove and easy to wash. The pan holds a 2 pound loaf. Nice size for a large family like mine.

When I had filled the pan with ingredients I went to put the pan back into the machine and found it to be a bit of a struggle to get the pan to twist back into place. I hoped that would change with use.

I made an italian loaf of bread for my first bread in the machine. The directions were to put the wet ingredients in first. Ok so this was different from my other machine which said to always put the wet ingredients in last.

I followed the directions and chose the basic function. (there are 12 functions in all). The bread machine began to whirr. It was not loud. As it went through its cycle my whole family knew when the machine had begun to bake because everyone came in saying. "What smells so good." The whole process from start to finish with the loaf of bread took 3 hours and 20 minutes. I could not see the LCD display well to set the machines functions. There are buttons to use to set the color settings on the machine for whether you want light or dark bread. This is very difficult to see.

This machine came with a little bread machine cook book. Really not something I would use. I prefer a larger cook book with tips. This one really was not helpful to me.

The directions for using this machine were a little confusing and all over the place. While they are numbered to tell the user how to make bread from start to finish the directions seem to ramble a bit with other things that should be placed in other parts of the direction guide. I prefer a manual with a trouble shooting guide if I am confused, I like to just move from step 1 to finish and that is not possible with this booklet. It is a good thing that using this machine is basically self explanatory. Otherwise the directions would confuse anyone.

The first loaf of bread smelled wonderful and came out very nicely. However, I struggled to remove it from the pan, even with a non-stick surface and non- stick paddle. The paddle stayed inside the bread and refused to come loose from the bottom of the pan. It was quite a hassle. It became easier with each loaf of bread after that though.

I used the medium setting for color and it came out nice and brown the first time I tried it. On all of my breads now I use the lightest setting because it always comes out brown no matter what setting I use. Seems like this function really does not work well.

If you are like me and use this machine infrequently this makes a decent loaf of bread and your house will smell fantastic. If you are a person who bakes a lot of bread I do not recommend this machine. It would frustrate people who really are into bread making. The settings seem to all work the same. It is a nice looking machine, it seems to have nice features. I like the size of the loaf, one loaf is enough for my whole family for two meals. Which is very nice. The viewing window is nice sized and easy to see through. The machine is easy to clean, the pan can go in the dishwasher. For the price and the basic functions of bread making it is a good value.
