desperately seeking a mystery fiction book

Hello everyone,
Please - I need help identifying a paperback book, the name and author of which I cannot recall. (I can see you smiling, asking "is that all?!) My husband and I read it within the past three years (well, that narrows down to thousands, right? ;)). It's the story of a woman bent on vengeance. Here is what my partner and I can recall about the story:
A young woman was assaulted/brutalized in New York City, maybe in or near Central Park (may have been based on the real-life case). The attacker (male) was caught, but got away either on a technicality or was never brought to trial (one more point we can't remember; also we can't remember if there was more than one attacker). The victim recovers from the worst of the attack (with psychological damage) and moves to another state, perhaps CA, perhaps not. Some years go by. She goes to work in or around a political campaign and finds that the attacker is the candidate who is running for election. She is attacked again by the same man who doesn't remember her because she had to have reconstructive surgery after the first attack, and her name is different (we seem to recall that she married a supportive man). From then on ... how she exacts revenge is stunning with a surprise twist.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can identify the book and author? (If you're the author and are reading this, God bless and please get in touch with me!) All we can recall, other than the details I've written, is how upsetting it was to read and how suspenseful it was. Both of us wanted to re-read the book (I work with victims). I've been searching online under keywords like 'vengeance', 'revenge', 'sexual assault and battery',
and such. Nothing looks familiar to me.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

RE: desperately seeking a mystery fiction book

Could it possibly be Retribution, by Jilliane Hoffman?

Some of the details match your memory, and some don't.

RE: desperately seeking a mystery fiction book

Hi Julie,
Thank you for the reply and URL. "Retribution" certainly sounds 'almost' like the book I'm seeking so I'm going to read it. I'm thinking that, if it's not the book from my memory, perhaps it will identify another piece of the puzzle I'm trying to solve.

If you find another one, please advise. Thanks again!
