RE: Silly question about book binding

I think you are describing a "cardboard article" book.

Check this Wiki article on Bookbinding

RE: Silly question about book binding

I don't think that's quite it.

I've seen these before, and they're quite clearly trade paperbacks. The only difference is that the covers are longer and folded back, like the dust jackets on a hardcover.

What's the point? I guess it's just to give you that space for promo material that a dust jacket gives you.

Seen a couple, mostly on books designed for hard use such as travel guides

That or built-in bookmarks, sort of taking the place of the ribbons in old family Bibles and the like.

Daryl, you could always look at the listing at a good bookstore (tatteredcover.com, etc.) to see if they mention the binding. It also might not really be important enough to mention - sort of in the same arena as size, typeface, and ISBN...

I wonder if it is there to reinforce the shape of the book. You know how paperbacks sometimes get warped? A stiffer cover would help it hold its shape better.

Either that or it's just a cheap improvement for the publisher to charge you a couple dollars more.
