Have you ever...

...started a book only to find it so... so... overshadowed by the book you'd just finished that you find it hard to keep reading?

After finishing Gibson's Spook Country, I'm reading Ridley Pearson's latest (Killer Weekend), and am just floored by how poorly it compares. Not having read Pearson before, I'm not certain whether I have a "Gibson hangover" or Pearson's just another pot-boiler like James Patterson.

You?

Yep. Most of the time, it's not really a quality of writing issue but a setting/premise issue.

I remember trying to read a book a few years ago after I had just read Persuasion by Jane Austen. I kept hearing the dialogue in the new book as if it were said by a Jane Austen character. It was hilarious, but incredibly distracting. I had to switch to Dick Francis for the nonce until I could get Austen out of my head.

RE: Have you ever...

Sometimes it happens within the same author's corpus. When a sequel doesn't stand up to the previous book. It's happened to me with Lois McMaster Bujold and Sean Russell.
