Epinions book club?

Has anyone thought of starting a book club among Epinions members?

In a bad way, isn't that what happened with that Ludlow Press book started by Disinclined? I have since blotted the memory of the name from my mind, though I know others will remember.

That book got passed around from member to member.

RE: Epinions book club?

I had this odd thought that maybe a few people could choose a book and write reviews on it or discuss it in some order.

In principle

I like the idea. But I know I wouldn't be able to participate in a book club right now. I guess that's not helpful, but you've got my moral support.

There could be separate clubs for different genres, or just alternate books if you don't like the book for that month.

EpinionsAddicts tried this once and it didn't work very well. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) Redlass and I were the only two who even bothered to read the book.

I guess I'd be willing to try, though. How would we choose the book?

That's the first thing I have to figure out. I would want something that no one has read yet, but that has at least one VH review so that there's no problems with who gets to post first.

I would also need something that libraries and/or dollar stores are likely to have, thus making the selections available to all.

I might look through some existing reviews on Epinions and choose something that needs more reviews.

The only other major problem would be deciding on if we should discuss then post reviews or post reviews and then discuss the book. (I'm leaning towards the first.)

I thought our reviews would serve as the discussion. If not, then I strongly think the reviews need to be posted first and posted on the same day. I don't think what other people think or the discussion should influence what people write.

I think it's a wonderful idea. There were a group of us that tried it back in 2000. I believe the only book we reviewed was "The Bluest Eye"--but I really, really enjoyed the reviews that came out of it. The next book was one that a lot of us got stuck on and the club sort of petered out after that.

Which isn't to say it can't be successful. I think as long as there is flexibility for members to come and go with any particular selection, you'll have a better chance of success. Also, it helps to allow at least 30-45 days for finding, reading, and reviewing a book.

The mistake of that book club was that the second book that we reviewed was a monster. IIRC, it was something like 800 pages! Oy!

But it was fun seeing the various reactions to the book that we all reviewed!

I like the idea of book clubs, but...

... I wouldn't be able to participate in one. My reading tastes are too narrow, and my brain is too unwilling to allow me to concentrate on something not to my taste.

Yes, I'll finish reading the occasional really bad book. It's the good but not for me books that beat me down every time.

But! If there is interest in a book club that just needs some organizing sans participation, I can certainly help with that.
