100 books every child should read
Just scanned through it (not reading through) but found many expected and some new ones.
Interesting.

RE: 100 books every child should read...
Great link, Tom! Thank you for posting this!
I read the introductory essay (nicely done) and then scanned the list. You're right, some I expected and some I found surprising. The list is heavily weighted toward the English, but considering the source, that's to be expected. (I think the Brits write most of the best children's literature anyway. Grin.)
Any glaring omissions for you? I'm still thinking on that one myself... |

I couldn't believe the number of those I had never heard of.

RE: 100 books every child should read...
Yes, there were definitely some of those. And then there were some where I knew the author, but not necessarily that title. I guess a list like that has to be a bit subjective...books the compiler loved as a child and loved reading to his children, etc.
It strikes me that poetry wasn't very well represented. Did I blink and miss Robert Louis Stevenson? Either his Child's Garden of Verses (for poetry) or his Treasure Island (for adventure) seem like good candidates. Maybe they're there...I'll have to check the list again!
It also struck me as odd that the compiler listed the entire Narnia series and the entire Pullman series (strange bedfellows indeed, and I don't agree that every child "should" read Pullman) but only included book 3 from Rowling. I agree Azkaban is a terrific book, but part of its greatness it where it stands in the middle of the series...you need the books before it and after it!
Loved seeing Noel Streatfeld's *Ballet Shoes* -- very good choice there, but not one you always see.
I really need to go back and look at that list...now I'm thinking of all sorts of books I think should be on there, but can't remember if they were! :-) |

Quote: carstairs38 I couldn't believe the number of those I had never heard of. Actually, I couldn't believe the number of them that I had read... the vast majority from the nineteenth century or the first half of the twentieth (considering when I was a child, I suppose that makes sense).
Yes - LeGuinn's Wizard of Earthsea...
but where's the Lorax?

I know I saw Treasure Island on the list, and I would have sworn The Lorax was there, too. I know my favorite Seuss tale didn't make it. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was read year round when I was a kid.

Yesh, the site's so treacly slow (in hounour of its BriutFlauvour) right now I can't get to the second page... but I agree that Treasure Island was in there, though not particularly prominently placed. The only Seuss books I saw were Yertle the Turtle and Cat in the Hat. Could be wrong. It's been known to happen...

Mark
And the few I've actually read. I've a few additions to recommend.

Staring at this it seems like the Brits have written the most, but I'm gearing up to create my own top 100. I wonder how far that will go?

Patsy, looking forward to seeing your list! I hope you post it in the writer's corner when it's done! |
