Personnel includes: John Scofield (guitar); David Sanborn (saxophone); Ray Anderson (trombone); Steve Jordan (drums). The inimitable John Scofield shows more of his sizzling yet sophisticated chops while plugging himself into this ELECTRIC OUTLET. His fluid, easygoing style is never less than intoxicating. Scofield doesn't possess the frenzied dexterity of, say, Al DiMeola, but that's not what this guitarist is about. He's about down-home and funky grit ("Just My Luck," with its chunky organ frills, quacking trombone, and popping bass), pounding the pavement (the signature tune "Pick Hits," wherein Scofield trades bass licks with his own bad self), and setting the dark alight ("Phone Home"'s lavish ribbons of guitar velvet).ELECTRIC OUTLET is also a session player's delight. Scofield's engaging compositions are set afire by the likes of drummer Steve Jordan, saxophonist David Sanborn, trombonist Ray Anderson, and Peter Levin, the latter adding just the right touch of synthesizer where needed. ELECTRIC OUTLET is not a circuit breaker. The juice is there for the taking, waiting for the listener to plug in.
