If there's one thing the mom's group knows about me is that I love Sandra Boynton books. Their illustrations are bright and lively, the wording cute and rhythmic -- there really aren't that many reasons to dislike Boynton's books for toddlers and preschoolers. They introduce everything from basic numbers and body parts to concepts like being accepted and feeling loved.
Book Info
This is another book in Boynton's line of "Boynton on Board" books, which are simply her books in "board book" form. It's thick and sturdy, with easy to turn pages. The pages are a high-gloss and the book itself wears well. It has 24 pages and retails for $6.95 when purchased by itself, or you can find it in the Big Box of Boynton (along with Barnyard Dance and Pajama Time) set for $18.95. It's not a bad savings if you were planning on purchasing all three books anyway, but it's a little hard to find. It is written and illustrated by Sandra Boynton and published by Workman Publishing.
Dinosaurs is one of Boynton's books that teaches opposites. You read through the book, learning about all the different dinosaurs there are out there. Everything from big dinos to tiny ones, from happy to sad, and all the ones in between.
No, NO! BAD DINOSAUR!
Just like with all her other books, Dinosaur's illustrations are classic Boynton. Bright, with bold colors, simple and fun are probably the best descriptors of Boynton's work. The pages are uncluttered, making it easy for little ones to pick out images and name them. The words in Dinosaurs will change to fit the description of the dinosaur on that page (ie: the word "big" is big and bold while the word "tiny" is... well... tiny). One great thing about this book is that the "opposite" concepts don't just stick to size (big/small, smooth/spiny), they branch into touch (cold/hot), behavior (good/bad) and time (early/later). The good/bad behavior page has been a nice instrument into teaching my two year old what's acceptable behavior and what isn't. I try to put emotion into my words (happy emphasis on 'good' and a negative emphasis on 'bad') so my son correlates the words on the page to his actual behaviors. Sometimes I'll stop and ask him questions about bad behavior (such as "What should happen to these bad dinosaurs?") and we'll discuss the consequences of behaving poorly. Since we've been reading this book for a while (pretty much every day for ... oh... a year), he's picked up some of my mannerisms (which is cute). He'll blow on the page for "hot" and shiver for "cold." He'll get sad and wave bye-bye when the last page comes. He truly enjoys this book and I can see him grow, day by day, his knowledge and vocabulary. In addition to teaching opposites, the book is handy in teaching colors (since everything is nice and bright) as well as expanding vocabulary (mountains, paint, easel, etc) since the illustrations are so clean and uncluttered.
Overall
It is one of my goals to have a well-rounded and large library for my children to enjoy. I want to instill in them a love for books and reading by both reading to them and having them see mommy read (though he has asked me to read him a Dean Koontz novel, I've refrained... I think my voice box would shut down). Learning opposites are a crucial part in your child's journey to learn how to read and this is a great tool to have. It's a perfect length for a squiggly toddler and chock full of opposites (in addition to some silly scenes... like cramming dinos in an elevator). It's a fun book to read for both mom and child, and both my son and I give it two thumbs up!
If you're looking for a fun book that teaches the basic concept of opposites, look no further than Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs by Sandra Boynton.
